“To the mountain we journeyed, through the clouds we rose, before the BaseCamp we stood — within us, the greatest conquest unfurled….”

In May 2018, I embarked on an adventure that was not just a physical journey, but also a profound exploration of self – the trek to the Mount Everest Base Camp. This expedition was more than just a test of endurance; it was a pilgrimage to the heart of nature and an odyssey into my own soul.

Our expedition team consisted of six friends accompanied by two experienced guides, who led us on our journey to the Everest Base Camp. The journey began with a mixture of excitement and fear, as I found myself amidst the majestic Himalayas, surrounded by the raw beauty of rugged trails and panoramic vistas.

The entire trek was 80 Miles (130 Kms) beginning from Lukla and we were on a 10 days itinerary. On average, it was 15Km hike every day. Although 15 km a day is not a long distance, the steep and rocky terrain slowed us down. If I remember correctly,

Day 1 – Katmandu to Lukla (Flight)

              Lukla to Phakding (Hike)

Day 2 – Phakding to Namche Bazar

Day 3 – Namche Bazar (Acclimatization)

Day 4 – Namche Bazar to Tengboche

Day 5 – Tengboche to Dingboche

Day 6 – Dingboche to Lobuche

Day 7 – Lobuche to Gorakshep

Day 8 – Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp

Day 9 – I was airlifted as my oxygen levels dropped to 50

Each step taken was a dialogue between my mind and body, as I traversed through lush forests, crossed suspension bridges, and navigated rocky paths. The air, thin and crisp, served as a constant reminder of the formidable challenge I had undertaken.

As I ascended, the altitude and the solitude became my teachers. The higher I climbed, the more I realized that reaching the base camp was not just a physical goal but a mental one. The landscapes around me – from the Sherpa villages with their vibrant culture to the awe-inspiring sight of the Khumbu Icefall – were not just external vistas but mirrors reflecting my inner journey.

Reaching the Everest Base Camp was a moment of triumph, a testament to my resilience and determination. My oxygen levels were constantly dropping and I was having acute headaches from day 6 but I was adamant and wanted to complete my trek. Standing at the foot of the world’s highest peak, I felt like a minuscule speck in front of the magnificent mountain and felt so humbled.  I felt a profound sense of achievement, humility, and connection to the universe. It was a place where dreams and reality converged, where the vastness of the landscape reminded me of the infinite potential within each of us. I felt like a minuscule in front of the magnanimous mountain and felt so humbled.

This trek was more than an adventure; it was a transformation. It taught me about the power of persistence, the importance of respecting nature, and the strength that comes from embracing challenges. I set out to conquer the mountain, but in the end, it became a journey of self-realization and self-conquest. The journey to the Everest Base Camp was a pilgrimage to the deepest parts of my soul, a journey that redefined my understanding of limits and possibilities and the beginning of my new adventure journey

In sharing this experience, I hope to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery. Whether it is scaling a mountain or pursuing a personal dream, the journey always starts with a single step, a step towards discovering who we truly are.

Life is short. Seek adventures, make memories — that’s what stays with us, not the moments spent in our comfort zone.

Cheers,

Shanthi 🙂
